...comes the cup of the fire elf.

This burl was appearantly cut from a tree that had been severely burnt in a fire. All of the outside edge was burnt, almost 1/4" into the wood. The color progressions were great for a natural edged turning. I added scarlet dye and sanded it back, on the outside. Finished in boiled linseed oil and lacquer. The wood is unknown but I believe it could be mulberry burl. The stem is African Blackwood. 7 3/4" x 2 3/4".

Comments and critiques are always welcome.

Thanks for looking.

Wow, that is beautiful, the charred areas on there really stand out and make this a very unique piece. I like the matching base wood on here to, great job on this.

Scott, you sure got some nice help from Mother Nature on the burl! The charred areas really add some rustic character to this one. Nice stem work, too, and a clean transition to the cup. Excellent as always!

Outstanding Scott! I like everything about this one- rustic burnt edge contrasting with delicate stem. Beautiful coloring and figure on the cup and just about perfect proportions and transitions. Can't imagine anything that would make it better. I've been thinking about trying to do one of these and this one might just push me over the edge. Will save the pic in my file of things to strive for!

Overall a beautiful piece, but I really like the way you mated the stem to the body of the cup. It is delicate and refined. Thanks for sharing.

Very cool! There are lots of things to like about this one, but I think my favorite bit is the slanted opening on the cup... It's just so interesting that way.

Great job. I agree with David that being able to see into the cup from the side sets this one apart!

My favorite of the three you posted yesterday morning. Adding the band of scarlet creates a sunburst effect, really nice work.

Scott, I like this so much I'm thinking of setting my wood pile on fire.:D
It gives it that dyed look while still being natural. Very nice!
