I heard a rumor (from a pretty good source) that Veritas is coming out with bench chisels this fall. Anybody have any info on these; looking forward to it. Apparently they would have launched sooner, but lead times on quality steel are delaying them...?

Hi Prashun

All I can say is that a great deal of thought has gone into these chisels. I had 10 for testing steel - blind ... no idea (except for 2) what steel formulation or hardness I was testing, and the handles were prototypes that I am certain will be changed significantly by the time the chisels are available for sale. Short answer, I have no idea of what will eventuate, and am just as curious as all. But it promises to be worth the wait.

I talked to an LV rep at a show and he said they'd be out in the fall. They needed time to set up the machines and test test test. He also let slip something about powdered metals...

I have been using Powdered Metal drills in machining process for years now have found their durability superior to high speed or tool steel.

More information on powdered metal.

I've heard it'll be in this order: bench, butt, mortise.

A great example of one of the many things I love about The Creek!

Not only can you swap stories and ogle over pictures of hand tool porn, but where else can you get great "coming soon" Intel about new tools?

I'm not saying my priorities are out of whack; BUT there's a reason why I look at The Creek before (instead of) CNN!

Thanks for the info,

Mike

I second Mike's comments.
