I've got a bunch of 3/4" walnut slab doors that I want to attach some battens to the back.
Size if approx. 29" high by 20" wide.
Any recommended size for the battens?
1st impulse is 2 pieces @ 1" thick by 1-1/2" wide and 17" long.
I have to keep in mind available screw lengths -this case 1½ screws.
And yes, I know the battens have to be slotted for movement.
Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

I'm having a problem understanding what you're trying to accomplish. You've got some walnut doors -- flat-slab design -- that are about 29X20.

And you want to attach some battens that are only 17" long?

Will the battens be vertical, or horizontal?

Will they be decorative, or somehow functional? If functional, what purpose?

Are these cabinet doors? Medicine chest doors?........

They're cabinet doors. The 17" length is for the 20" width -a 1½" space from each side of the door looks about right to me, plus they're overlay doors.
