Hi all, can I simply run cat5 from a network switch to a wireless router and have a wireless internet area?

You might need a cross-over cable between the two.
If this is at work, check with the network people. Many don't like wireless on their networks. It's a security issue.

No, not at work, just a commons area for youth at our church. Actually not even a network per say, just several computers through a switch. Not sure what you mean by crossover cable? Thanks, Sean

It should work OK. That's what I'm doing in my setup.

You don't need crossover cable to connect. Just use any CAT5 cable from switch port to WAN port on the wireless router.
It will work. To make your wifi secure you will need to login into wireless router page.

Maybe... You can't just simply plug it in and have it work. Where is the internet coming from to begin with? Another router? You can put the wireless router in access point mode or if you haven't purchased one yet just get a wireless access point.

Internet>modem>switch>out to computers/wireless router

Sounds like you have the right equipment. Put that router into access point mode and disable NAT and you should be good to go.

Don't disable NAT. Set it up in bridge mode. Disabling nat will disable firewalling.

Shouldn't it go: Internet->Modem->Wired Router->Switch->Wireless Router

Don't need a wired router with a switch in place.

?? It would already be NAT'd by the first router....

Depends on what the ISP is providing. Some of them have a router/switch straight to the provider. My setup is as you describe.

He might. Time Warner provides a simple Cisco 2100 which does require a router behind it if you want to run more than one computer off the connection.

I would worry about wireless attacks....

Yeah I suppose, but I'd use DDWRT and just VLAN the access point. :P
