I used the satin sheen and am a bit disappointed. It looks dull. How much additonal sheen will their (Target water base) semi-gloss bring.

Thanks.

FWIW, I always use a touch of amber tint with waterbased acrylic. It warms everything up. The acrylic on it's own does indeed look a little lifeless. Maybe try a test piece with a touch of amber in it first to see if that livens it up.

Did you fully mix up the container of finish before you strained it into your gun? I only use the satin variety (except for an occasional special purpose) and it always has a pleasant sheen to it...never looks dull. Also be sure you're not spraying it on too "dry"/thin. I do agree with John that most water borne products are not going to have a really warm feeling by themselves. Since I typically use oil and shellac before spraying the EM6000, that gets taken care of. But as John states, you can add a little water soluble dye to the EM6000 to warm it up a little if you're not using something already "warm" under it.

Did you use GLOSS as first coat?

Used satin for all coats. Under lacquer is shellack.

I'm currently making cabinets for our kitchen. I'm using a single coat of amber Ultraseal and 4-coats of EM6000. We really like the finish. It's hard to tell from a photo but here is a side panel:

Is the surface of the finish smooth?

Used curly maple.

Ed,
I guess the question is, what do you mean by "dull"? Is it not shiny enough, or blah/bland looking? What was you complete finish schedule, was it satin 6000 over natural curly maple? If it was just the gloss factor, I'm in East Hanover and I could give you a few ounces of semi-gloss to try.

Finish Schedule:
1. water based dye
2. BLO
3. Clear Shellack
4. 4 Coats EM6000

Used satin for all coats.

THAT IS YOUR PROBLEM.
FIRST COAT IS ALWAYS GLOSS.
If you put satin first coat, next satin will make it more duller.

1 coat is always GLOSS
2 coat GLOSS
3 satin
4 satin

+1 Also note that there is a big difference visually between sheen and ckarity. The gloss gives more clarity and the satin knocks the sheen down.
Building all your coats using satin tends to hide or obscure the grain.

Hijack Alert!

Can you spray all gloss, and then rub out the finish with 0000 wool or scotchbrite pads, to achieve a satisfactory finish?

Which might be what I was thinking to try.

After 4 coats of satin, if I put down a coat or 2 of semigloss, whould that help. Right now piece looks dull.

Is that cherry or maple, Mike? Looks nice...I'm doing the same in maple.

A coat of semi over the satin will work.

There is a big difference between satin (20 sheen) and semi gloss (35 sheen)
