View Full Version : Anyone made a honing rig for use on the lathe?

Was thinking of building a jig to put one or more MDF honing wheels on a bar and put between centers on my 46-460 Delta lathe. Anyone done something like this and have photos......

I made one that screws onto my spindle by first making a glue block which I tapped with a bealle spindle tap, then glued on 2 pieces of MDF which were already glued together, turned it round then applied a lot of the green buffing/honing compound while it was spinning at a good speed to really imbed the stuff into the wheel. I've only used it to sharpen skews, but it works good for it. You can use the face or the edge, just make sure the wheel is turning with your edge and not against it or you'll tear it up. Gotta love Stu...the only Canadian I know with a Japanese accent...I think I'm going to make one of those this weekend!

Here's mine... piece of plywood with a "skin" of leather attached to an outboard faceplate and charged with fine emory...

Thats pretty close to what I was looking for,,something with a few profiles. I wonder if the length affects any runout being that far out from the head without the tail support?
