I posted several weeks ago that I was about ready to pull the trigger and get a Jet 1220. I was recently in a Woodcraft store and was able to compare the Jet to the Delta 46-460. Boy what a difference, more hp, easier belt change, better fit and finish, etc. But...it's $200 more.

For those of you who own a 46-460, is it worth waiting a while longer to save up the funds to get the Delta over the Jet?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Hey Joe...I wonder in your review of these at the store if you were doing an accurate comparison. Each of these lathes has a counterpart that does not have the continuous variable speed feature. Comparing the VS models Jet 1220VS to 46-460 is an accurate comparison...and current WC pricing has the Jet at 50 bucks more and I think it's NOT reversible..something you may want from time to time.

If you like the Delta, but want to keep prices lower...the Delta 46-455 is more comparable to the Jet 1220 (no VS).

I think you'll find, and I'll agree...it's best to save money and go for the most lathe you can get. If that's in a midi-size lathe...the Delta 46-460 is a real champ and has been very well received in it's short time on market.

Go with the Delta 46-460 because it has variable speed, reversing, 1 hp motor and is a good performer.........you will be able to get the most out of the lathe with those features, and it has a good reputation for quality.

Okay, I turn on a Powermatic, but WAIT FOR VARIABLE SPEED!!! I can't imagine ever having spent so many hours on a lathe without variable speed. Call it a corny pun, and yes, I made this up, but once you go variable, fixed speed is unbear(i)able. Seriously; being able to turn up or down a few 10's of rpms is extremely useful for eliminating harmonic vibrations.

I have the Jet 1220 VS. That being said I am satisfied with it but if the Delta had been out when I bought it would have been the delta 46-460 for the 1 hp, VS, and 1hp.

My lathes that I use are both big. My mini's are older jet 10-14 and a Delta 10-16 (I think) but if I was buying now DELTA 46-460 all the way!!!!!!
I teach and use mostly Jet's 10-14 and 12-20 but they just got a Delta 46-460 and the difference is unbelievable even without the VS.

I held out for the delta, found it on sale locally and snatched it up. NO regret.

Thanks guys for your input. You've helped me make up my mind. I'm gonna hold out a little longer till I get the funds for the Delta 46-460.

Thanks again.
