View Full Version : A Few More Turkey Calls

Here's a few more turkey calls, some birdseye maple, a cherry, and a walnut. The great news is I paid for the delta 46-460 I bought a few months ago with the sales from the calls. It's nice to be able to turn something useful and has some demand. For some reason everyone always wants the birdseye calls.

Boy, I like all of these......................great job, and the birdseye is is just stunning! Gobbler season is in full swing......I have seen turkeys in the fields strutting already as I have driven the highway last week.

I just got done making my first pot call. I went by the plan that was in a recent Woodturning Design magazine. It had 6 holes in it. Is there any advantage to 8 holes? You have some really nice looking calls there. I made mine for my son who will be going on his first turkey hunt next week. Does the type of wood affect the sound at all? Just wondering. Thanks in advance Jared

Sweet looking pots, I hope you signed them all..............

Wonder if the maple is the better "tonewood", as guys that play with my calls always choose the squeakiest, scratchiest ones available. Maybe the resonance properties are better with the maple.

Also, nice photography. Thanks for sharing.

I've found that harder woods seem to sound a little better, that walnut sounds ok but you need to have a bunch of strikers to try to find one that really works well.

Yep, my two "Pro Staff" guys always go through lots of strikers and are always asking for more. This wood, that design, little thinner here, fatter there......you know the drill.......:) What glue are you using to attach the slate/glass/unobtanium to the call itself?

I've been using plumber's goop to attach the slate and the soundboard, seems to work pretty good. As to the earlier question about the # of holes, I actually reduced the hole size and it doesn't seem to affect the sound.

Wonderful work Jeremy. They have about a hundred auctions each summer around here to raise money for all the little amish school houses. These calls would be a hit with all the hunters that attend those things.

Is there a good supplier for the calls to get the required pieces? ie. slate and glass

Thanks

Richard,

I have emailed the guy at Grassy Creek a few times and he never responds. Is there a phone number? I do not see any other form of contact to reach them.

Dave,

No, I don't have anything, unless there's a # on an invoice, and that's if I kept one..........will try to check in the morning. Maybe someone on one of the forums knows?

Turkey season is still in in some states, so maybe they're just "busy"..........

They do ship quick.

Thanks Richard,

Don't rush to find it. I went through the check out to make a purchase and it says in the check out that they only ship within the USA.

Oh well, his loss.

Thanks

Jared,

8 holes is easier for me to lay out, but I don't think it makes any difference. Height of the shelf and material selection and attention to detail would play a bigger role, at least in my opinion. I think the combination of this call and that striker is also key, as they all sound different with a different striker, etc.
