This is my first trurning from osage orange. A friend sent me a log from his fire wood pile. Not at all familiar with the wood, so this was just a practice piece from one of the smaller blanks. 5 1/2 by 2 1/2 and 1/4 wall. It has one crack already and a few dings from coming off the lathe and sailing across the shop. I think my tenon was too short for such wet wood. Very interesting wood. Turned well and has neat looking grain. I turned to final and gave it a quick coat of BLO and shellac. Interested to see how it behaves as it drys.

Nice looking bowl, I love turning osage when its wet. It gets pretty hard when dry.

It will oxidize to a honey brown color over time, and it is the best fencepost wood around because it turns to stone as it dries!

Very good looking bowl and attractive wood. Hope it hangs together as it dries.

Really a nice job on this one, Paul. I have yet to turn any osage, though it is plentiful around here (and, nearly everywhere!) Jamie is right - it gets HARD when dry. Seasoned osage and locust are two woods to avoid IMO.

I love how they sail across the shop. Reminds me of sparrows. Fluttering with twitterpated desire in the spring....singing their songs and bringing laughter to the wind.

Nice bowl too!!! :)

Nice Bowl. I've not turned any Osage since I have none but it looks great with the grain pattern. Maybe it will keep that shape. I do have a nice chunk of Black Locust to turn. I've heard it will be like a rock if it dries out.

I think it is attractive and well turned & finished. Very pretty.

Beautiful golden color. Does using shellac with UV protection additives help keep the color of osage? Guess I should turn some of mine and test it out. I guess in the end all osage darkens. This will always be a nice bowl.

I love osage. When it is dry, put it back on the lathe and run a torch over it in a few areas, defintely adds character
