The homeowner had a PM 66 in his garage that was all rusty, bad rusty, and asked me what I could do for him. I didn't want to take a belt sander to it but it was about at that point. I thought about it while I was working and then he asked me if I could sharpen a Japanese knife for him. Its T&M, so I said yes. I don't care what I do to get paid. Anyway... as I am sharpening his knife with my Makita flat wheel, I looked over at the saw, and there you have that......

I put on the 200 grit Green stone, splashed some water on the top, flipped that baby upside down, and started it up. I worked it in a fixed pattern, cleaned and watered and ground a few times, and that top is just like new. So if you have a Makita flat wheel, you may not have known it, but you have a surfacer in your shop.:D

I've done many cast iron tops with just a random orbit sander starting with 80-100 grit and going up to about 320 grit, using many sheets of each.

Makes em almost perfect from rusty crusty.

Helps when you have a sander with good dust collection though.
