This little HF has one coat of tung oil so far and I am looking for input on glossy vs matt for this piece. I am currently thinking about using gloss lacquer and taking the shine off with steel wool if the gloss doesn't work out. It is 7.75" wide x 5.25" high. The wall thickness is about 3/16". C & C welcome

Wow, what a great looking piece of walnut! My vote would be for a couple more coats of the tung oil and then buff to a soft luster.

What a great chunk of wood done right! Methinks it will look nice any way you go.

Very good form, and love the wood. I'd have to see both glossy and matt in order to make up my mind. :)

Just finish it whatever way makes you smile in the end. It's going to be a wonderful piece. (It already is) :)

That is a really nice form and an equally nice piece of walnut. I think a deep gloss Steve S. finish would look really good on this, but either way, you can't lose on this one.

Nice form and walnut just sets it off. I really don't think it would make any difference what the finish is......it's a winner as-is. I think any of the above suggestions will work great.

Great form and is going to be a winner no matter if glossy or matte! Looking forward to seeing photos of the finished piece!

Nice form, nice translation of the growth lines. As for finish, my first gut feel opinion said: gloss the body, leave the collar muted, blacken the inside lip or just under the collar to get more shading to pop the opening rim.

If the gloss and muted areas don't pop, consider a thin black sharpie accent line on the vertical edge of the collar. Personally, I cannot do this free-hand myself so I usually do it with the piece on the lathe and the tool rest so support me. I will use a donut chuck to re-mount the piece....however it is quite frustrating to re-center the piece for a stupid line. I have screwed this up on at least one occasion so my accent line became a dyed black collar.

Really nice HF and the walnut is great. Either way glossy or matte it will be a winner.
