192295Here is a bowl I made for my neighbor who gave me a huge 2' x 4' maple burl. It is 20" in diam. my first outboard turning, everything went smoothly until I started the inside, I thought i had made nice cuts on the wings until I shined my light at an angle and found tool marks, so I had to sand with the lathe off with 80 grit to correct, what a lot of work. once I got past the wings everything went smoothly. I couldn't go past 300 rpm because of the imbalance of the piece, so it was quite a challenge for me. I left the base heavy to counteract the large top's imbalance. I think I should have done the base with more of a curvature. This picture was taken with a piece of plywood across an office chair, you can see the arms of the chair to get a sense of how large it is.

That is beautiful, and large. Great color and character. I'd say your neighbor is getting one heck of a return for giving you that burl.

JW, I like this piece alot. I may agree with you about the base, but still it's one heck of a piece and gift too. Well done.

With the idea of more curvature on the base, I would call this piece, Perfection. The 80 grit gouge was well worth it.....at least from my perspective ;) :)

Jerry - curve on the base or not - this sure is one pretty bowl! Your neighbor is going to be thrilled! Very nice work! Thanks for sharing!

Sure is pretty, but it won't hold a lot of soup.

Really nice and unusual piece. I think the base looks great and fits the bowl fine. A lot of work but the result makes it worthwhile IMO.

Veeery nice top... with my heavy hand, I probably would have ripped those wings right off, especially so thin.

Yes, nice way to display some of the beauty found inside these locally available woods. The wings must have been a treat to spin and you executed it very nicely in the end. I also must agree with the base change, but why quibble. What is your outboard turning setup like? I am researching and considering my options.

Very nice looking piece, your neighbour is lucky to have someone to give a piece of wood to and get this back in return.

Very cool looking piece. I love that suspended look of the wings. I would agree that the base is a little heavy for such a delicate "bowl" but overall a very nice turning.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. David, I have the Nova XP outboard accessory, I am very pleased with the way it preforms.

This is a wonderful piece! Must have been a challenge being off balance and those big wings circling about.

A fabulous bowl, kind of reminds me of some kind of mushroom out of Alice in Wonderland.

Great piece of wood and work was my first thought. The second was "only one picture, I want to see more!"
