Finished this bowl last week then gave it to the friends who provided the Mesquite. Approx. 9" x 4", finished with Teak Oil and 7 coats of WOP, then buffed. It seemed like the end grain would never stop soaking up the WOP! C&C welcome.

Kelvin:

Very nice bowl. The grain in the shot of the bottom almost looks 3-D. I have been turning some maple lately and know what you mean about it soaking up the poly.

Nice work, Kelvin, and a beautiful piece of wood! I haven't done much with mesquite, but I have found that a coat or two of shellac really helps seal a piece and get a much quicker build of WOP.

Good job on that bowl! Giving a bowl to people who give you wood is a good way to have plenty of turning wood.

Very nice, looks like it was starting to spalt, which would encourage increased uptake of finish.

Kelvin, very nice wood and a beautiful finish, sometimes I like a heavier bowl and I like this one.

Nice work on the bowl Kelvin - sure like the way the grain was highlighted with your finish! Bet your friends love it!

Lovely wood and a striking finish... Nicely done! JK's suggestion about using shellac will help prevent the wood from soaking up so much finish.
