Am about ready to pull the trigger on a Jet 1220 and would like to get a chuck to turn bowls, etc.
What do you recommend?

Also, I have a 1/2" Jacobs chuck with 1/2-20 threads on it. Is there an adapter available so that I can use it in the tailstock on the 1220?

Thanks in advance for your replies and suggestions.

The 1220 is a nice lathe, I have one and like it.

The Grizzly H6265 chuck is a good value and about the right size.

A Jacobs style chuck from Harbor Freight will be less expensive than a adapter and good enough for use on a wood lathe.

I agree with Dennis. I have 4 grizzly chucks with different jaws on them and love them. I got 4 of them for the same cost as 1 Vic chuck and a couple of jaws. They are a clone of the Vicmarc VM 100 so those jaws will fit that chuck. I agree it would be cheaper just getting a jacobs chuck with a MT 2 morse taper than trying to find a adapter.

Joe,
I've had my JWL-1220vs since 09/09, and I just love it.

I got a Woodriver 4-Jaw Chuck from Woodcraft, and it's worked fine for me.
I also bought the flat jaws, No. 1, and No. 3 jaws from Woodcraft.

I've since gotten the C Series Alligator jaws and the No. 1 Step jaws from PSI.
To allow the C Series to fit the WR chuck, I widened the C Series screw holes 1 size and machined the heads of the WR-size screws to fit the C Series. The combination works fine.

FYI, the grizzly 4 jaw scroll chuck is on back order with an anticipated arrival date toward the end of May... I ordered a couple, and I'm impatiently waiting for them.

Hey congrats on getting a 1220! I have had mine since Dec and absolutly love it! Are you getting the VS model? Looking forward to seeing some of your projects once you get your lathe in and get going on it.

Thanks guys for your replies/suggestions. I haven't gotten the 1220 yet but will in the next month or so. Still lacking a few funds.

I bought an Apprentice Chuck from Craft Supplies for $169 for my Jet mini and really like it. I think its a good value because it comes with four sets of jaws and I use all of them.

The Nova G3 or Nova Midi is the right size for this machine, or even the Talon is a nice size chuck for this machine but is quite a bit more expansive. The Nova SN2 while bigger will not harm the bearings on that 1220 and is on sale right now at Woodcraft so that is another option.

Good Luck

I have the nova 2 chuck and love it. I also have the nova midi and hate it, it's a good chuck, but just don't like it.
