Well, I picked up my first load of walnut from a family friend (probably 3 more good truckloads!!), also think I found a piece of a holly bush in their wood pile too .... I think this walnut is going to be pretty!

Also this weekend I ran into my best friends in N Georgia and they had taken down a tree in their yard (not sure what it is, I reckon its an oak??)

You are going to love turning walnut. Just be carefull the first time unless you absolutely know for sure that you aren't allergic to it's dust.

Have fun with it.

Nice load Lee, next time your up this way stop by and I'm sure I can supply you with all you want to haul home. Last Thurs.and Fri. we hauled oak for most of the day. The first load I took was the but of the tree and "one piece" filled up my Dumptruck. When it was on the ground the guy cutting it had a 36" bar on the saw and he had to cut it from both sides if that gives you an idea of the size of tree it was. You could have gotten a 36" plus bowl from it easy.

191873This is the picture of the Monster tree. It sticks up to the top of the bed. It's about 12ft long and about 5ft through and solid OAK

WOW Donny .. and I thought my 24" walnut was big ... hahaha .... yeah, I had way too many divesions this weekend, and my WIFE helped me load that walnut in my truck .... I didnt want to push my luck.

I really like turning walnut, really looking forward to getting started on some. I am pretty much out of anchor seal, so I gotta either stop getting wood, or get more anchorseal!

Congrats on all the wood Lee! If you can't seal it - start turning! Would hate to see this wood go to waste! Have fun!

Lee, great haul! Have fun with that stuff...especially the holly..I say. I just came across some recently and have been working on a piece this past weekend. I can't imagine what it's like dry...its very hard wet, but it leaves a super finish. I had near zero tearout on any cuts for a hollowing project this is end grain oriented (looking at end grain from foot).
I'm hoping it doesn't crack on me...I shrink wrapped it outside to let it dry from inside...we'll see. I keep experimenting.
I had a piece that I turned the outside but didn't get to the inside...and I forgot to wrap it in plastic, though I did shellac seal outside...and next day, it had a surface that resembled dry lake bed. Yikes.

Nice score. Lee. That walnut crotch is gonna be great. And hopefully the spalting in the oak will work out. That'll be cool. :)

Lee, that is some nice looking walnut, for sure. Looks like it is cut into short sections - might need to make the next ones a little longer if you are the guy on the chain saw!

They are shorter on the big pieces. There are still 2 pretty good sized trunk sections that I couldnt lift into my truck with the Mrs as a helper! I can't wait to get started, I probably will try to rough out the section I sliced yesterday. Man that stuff is heavy when its 24" diameter !!!!

Lee, I think it would be nice if you can keep a little sapwood in the walnut crotch. Either way it looks great.
