This is a pic of the bowl that Mark Kauder and Dan Barber helped me turn. It's bowl #1, and no, I have not ordered a lathe. I'm going to steal my friend's lathe, since he never uses it.

Here's another shot of the bowl. Help me out here guys, but I believe it's cherry. It does still need to be sanded and finished, but it was a lot of fun so far. Dimensions are roughly 6-3/4" x 2-3/4".

Some of the things we came home with. There's a hunk of beeswax (Thanks, Lee Schierer!) Some scrollwork: Terry helped my wife, Kristine, turn the house and the tiny bear next to it, and he did the walnut "Painter on a ladder"--thanks, Terry! Thanks to Rob Lee for the Lee Valley/Veritas keychain, and special thanks to Keith Outten for the SMC bumper-sticker and the acrylic square, both of which he cut and engraved on his laser.

Good work Jason - no credit to the teachers - we just started you off - kept you from hurting yourself, and then let you go at it. Great way to lean is to turn.

The borrowed lathe is the way to go if you can. Learn what you want to do, and then you will be better educated to purchase the lathe that will work for you.

Jason,

Congratulations on your first bowl. Looks pretty good to me. You better be careful, they say that "Round Work" can become addictive. Thanks for sharing.

Your wife doesn't believe me, but she did pretty durn good for a first time scroller. That out house pattern is pretty popular. I cut two of the painters. I wonder if Ray found his yet.

I'm sure you'll find lots of uses for the beeswax. I noticed that the bag emptied soon after the announcment was made that it was there. I'm sorry there wasn't enough for everyone. I'll have to break out the whips and beat the little buggers to get busy and make more, as I'm now fresh out of wax.

I made sure I got some this time. Last time, I thought I'd get some on the way out and you left before I got it, so I was kinda bummed. But this time more than made up for it. Thanks again, Lee!
