So I've got this Jet 1642, and what do I turn on it?

16mm Buttons.

So what finish would you put on these?

I would use a beeswax oil mix.

Why that as opposed to say, a good coat of high solids lacquer?

I would use an oil based poly because it would soak into the wood and protect it. Depending on how many coats and type used, it can be flat, satin or gloss to fit the need. I have used it on buttons I have made and it works well.

I personally like the tactile feel and the "warmth" of the natural wood, I also like the patina that forms from wood that is handled.

How about....

Button Polish? :D

Sorry,couldn't resist.

Gary should like it anyway. To quote from the website... "Button Polish is traditionally used when a slightly warmer appearance is required."

Jim, What type of garment will they be used on. I like the oil wax thing if it is too be a casual garment that will last a long time. The wood will be somewhat protected and develop a wonderful patina from use. Now if this is going on something a bit snappy then I would say lacquer. WOP would be fine and probably last a good long time as well.

The sample of material is shown in the picture with the buttons. These will be sewn to a green Alpaca sweater.

Then I am a oil/wax person. By the way, cool buttons.
