Came home today to find a box on the porch. I have a couple of orders I am expecting, but not this soon. Looked at the box - BAXTER SMITH!! Hmmmmm......this has to be good!:D

Inside, amongst another million peanuts (I was running low!;)) was this -

Congrats John! Really nice gesture Baxter!

Man - sure is some beautiful wood! Love the variety of color!

Bet you are glad you have a lathe with some additional swing! Should make for an amazing form! Have fun with it!

"you can just ship me that ol' useless chunk from the middle!!!!:D I mean, it's just in the way - may as well help you out!"
When I read that John, the thoughts of relief that washed over me are just hard to describe.:)

The thought of you trying to decide whether it was worth turning something so beautiful, and so wet, never entered my mind. Raincoats and green corrosive shavings all over those shiny new ways....!
Not to mention everyone wondering if you could leave them sitting there long enough to put down your gouge, pick up the camera and take a picture of it.;) Enjoy, we all will!:)

"and green corrosive shavings all over those shiny new ways"....you betcha!

I cover my ways as much as I can when I turn it. It's the most corrosive wood I've encountered.

Folks, this piece really has some potential! I know it needs to be roughed pretty soon, but I want to "ponder" it a bit. Due to the "pre-shaping" from the core, it does lend itself to a bowl, but I think there may be something else hiding in that wood! I have a project in mind for the next turning, but soon after I suspect this one may be on the lathe. And, a triple coat of wax on the ways sounds in order!!

Thanks, again, Baxter!!

Well, sheesh... if you wanted peanuts, I have a boatload of them here for ya. I'll just take some of that ugly wood you have in return, we'll call it even.

John - It appears you'll certainly be having some fun with that cherry wood. ****I have a suggestion to protect your brand new 1642 from rusting while turning green cherry or oak or the other woods that seem to cause the brown stuff to prosper!!! I just purchased a new 3520B and want to keep my ways looking good. I had searched earlier posts about various waxes and sprays and I think I had used them all on my 1642 (yep, Johnson Paste wax, T-9, WD40, Silicone spray)......but none seemed to provide the protection I was looking for. I read that someone was using a product from John Deere so I decided to look into it. I came home with a can of Fluid Film Rust Preventer. It comes in a can and has the consistency of Vaseline. I rubbed it on with a rag and left a coating on the ways as I turned 3 or 4 large chunks of wet oak. It works fantastic, and will be my main treatment for wet turning. Johnson Paste wax will still be used when I'm doing final turning for dry woods.

Mike, interesting stuff! Do you remove it with MS in order to apply wax afterward?

Congrats John! One can never have too many packing peanuts. :D

But Baxter was a little stingy with them. I mean, taking up some box space with cherry burl. What's that all about? :p

:D :D :D

Good on ya, Baxter. :)

John, not as nice as a slightly spalted tiny piece of Sycamore, but it'll do...

John - I haven't tried to stip the Fluid Film from the ways in order to apply wax yet. I'll let y9ou know tomorrow when I do. I will be trying MS as I expect that it will work.

John,

That wood was just a spacer, Baxter was sending you peanuts. Ok, this thread is a couple of days old and still no rough out.
