I know we have been through this before. I started to post this in the workbench book rant thread but realized by the time I got done with this it was too far off for that thread so here is a new one.

I used 7 resources and found all of them had a piece in what I came up with. I used the following:

1. Chris Schwarz's first book.

2. Scott Landis's book.

3. Harry Stassil's bench post here on these pages. http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?103805-Neanderthal-wisdom-FAQs

4. The workbench thread in the FAQ of these pages. http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?124750-Show-us-your-Bench

5. Tom Conroys shoulder vice fixture. http://www.wkfinetools.com/tMaking/art/viseJig/viseJig1.asp
(http://www.wkfinetools.com/tMaking/art/viseJig/viseJig1.asp)
6. Patrick Edwards workbench shown at the woodtreks site. http://woodtreks.com/category/tools/workbench/

7. Robert Rozaieski’s workbench build at the Logan Cabinet Shoppe. Bob is working on his website at the moment and I was unable to get the link. He hangs out here so maybe he will see this and update a link.

All of these resources played a part in my design. The bench is based on Ian Kirby’s design that was in the Landis book. Kirby’s bench is very simple with just one face vice and some planning stops. The base is straight forward and the length is just what I have room for.
One side of the bench will be exactly as the books diagrams provide with one addition. I will add a second face vice on the other end which will hold the shoulder vice fixture.
The other side of the bench will be drastically different. I am sure Kirby would disapprove :(. My rational is I do not have room for 2 benches and am considering the sides two different benches just kinda attached in the middle. I got this idea from the video Patrick Edwards did.
Kirby’s design calls for a 30 inch top with a 3 inch overhang on each side. I am shrinking the top by three inches. This will allow for an apron on side 2 that is flush to the top (like Bob’s and Harry’s). The apron will hold a twin screw vice as well as a leg vise. I gleaned the knowhow on the leg vice from Schwarz’s book. Actually much of the vice info is best found in this book. The twin screw will be like Harry's.

The opposite end of side 2 from the leg vice will have either a wagon vice or the Veritas inset vise and a row of dog holes.
The top and apron will also have random holes for a pair or Gramercy hold fasts.
If I can figure out sketchup I will try to draw this out.

The base will be built from 4x and 2x stock as Kirby did. Kirby used maple for the top but i think I will go with 2x stock here as well.

Thanks, John...

Chris Schwartz brings up a key factor you might want to consider. Tailor the bench width to your arm length. The same for placement of dog holes on the far side of the bench.

How far can you comfortably reach to do some planing or sanding in the middle (depthwise) of the bench?

Hi Gary, Actually the dog holes will be very close to side 2 of the bench. Between 2 1/2 and 4 inches depending on if it is the inset vise or a wagon vice. The bench will have room on both sides of it for me to walk from side to side and use the different vise configurations. Thanks, John
