I wonder if my DSL provider would block the auction-site-which-shall-not-be-named-by-rhymes-with-key-pay for me.

Everything you are about to see, I snagged by finding something about to end and entering a bid on a whim.

First up came the #7 "Savage" for $26

Then, a rusty #5, a #103, and a transitional blade for $13

http://cthompson.com/photos/planes/trio-a.jpg

And then I found a #5 in what appears to be really decent condition for $15

http://cthompson.com/photos/planes/5a.jpg

And then, when I wasn't even looking seriously, along comes a pre-lateral Type 4 #8 for barely over $50.

So, in the past week, I've managed to accumulate what I hope to me some seriously nice users while barely breaking $100 with shipping.

And yet, I don't even have a bench with a vise. Is this a sickness?

I know the rules. I'll be getting these cleaned up as soon as they arrive, figure out some way to c-clamp a length of wood to a table and produce pictures of fluffy shavings. :)

Sickness?

What sickness?

All I see is some dang fine bargain hunting, in the best tradition of this great country of ours.

I know I speak for most folks here in the Enlightened zone of SMC when I say I'm darn glad to have made your acquaintence.

I see absolutely no reason why you should not go on with your fine, judicious purchases of fine old American tools!

Now then, the fact that you do not have a bench with a vise is a problem, but it's easily taken care of.

First off, for the bench. Just go to http://www.maplewood-farm.com/
They have #1 common Hard Maple for $1.75 per board foot!

These folks have it almost as cheap: http://www.willislumber.com/

(Note: The preceeding are both located in the lovely state of Ohio.)

But if neither of those work out, well, you live pretty much in hardwood heaven, so just get out the phone book and look for small millers, or go to http://www.woodfinder.com (http://www.woodfinder.com/)

So far as the vises go, well, you've go two Rockler's in the state. Even better, there is a Wholesale Tool over in Indy, where you can buy a very functional woodworker's bench vise for just $19! Yep, I said just $19! (I have two of them, one on either end of my bench.) Here's the link. http://www.wttool.com/p/2108-0080

So get with it, young man!

And be sure to keep us up to date on your spend... er ... I mean, "savings."

You don't have it bad yet. You haven't even started looking at hand saws, back saws, dovetail saws, braces and bits, egg beater drills, push drills, moulding planes, dado planes, plough planes, combination planes, marking devices, and chisels. Call us when it takes you over an hour to go through all the favorite searches you've setup :D

Tom,

My lack of bench was why I went looking for a jointer plane. My goal was to build one of Bob and Dave's Good, Fast, Cheap Benches (http://www.terraclavis.com/bws/beginners.htm), even if in Pine. Though at $1.75 a board foot, I may look to your sources.

$19 for a vise is insane. I wonder how much it would cost to ship.

Wendell, I don't have "The sickness" yet with the other stuff, but I do have two old backsaws, a Disston and a Jackson from ebay. The Disston was sent to Cooke's Sharpening for a complete rework with a rip cut, and it's amazing. I've got a stack of old socket chisels I need to get fettled and, uh, with handles. Probably eight or nine, Stanley 750/720s, a Buck and, I think, A Witherby. The thing is, Chisels aren't as easy to grade and decide whether to purchase on that auction site, so I'm more cautious.

But trust me, the sickness is there. :)

Oh, and Tom, I clicked woodfinder and searched from my zip code.

There's a place three miles from my house. Amazing.

Try Douglas Fir. It's a tad more durable than pine and not that much more in price. ;)

Have a great day!
