First 'real' time using transtint dyes. The wood is some of the maple I recently acquired and I used some transtint blue, and sanded it back a little. Got some pretty cool color variations!

Its a slimline pen and I finished it with CA, polished out to 12000 MM. I liked the way it looked, so I made a 'Big Brother' bottle stopper from another cut-off... :D

C&C welcome, as always!

Very pleasing effect, Lee. I like the combo, too. In the last pic, the wood almost takes on a metallic ore appearance.

I can't resist ! Great penmanship !

The colors make the pen so custom. It reminds me of some 1930's jewelery I saw on Antiques Road Show.

Thanks for posting !

Lee - the color looks great! Once you start playing with dye - it can become habit forming because of the beauty it can add to the wood. Also, it is a lot of fun because you never know quite what the outcome is going to be!

I know what you mean Steve .... I roughed out a vase (weed pot, since I dont hollow yet) with the same maple and I think I will try the dye on a much larger sample size .... then its off to find more colors than just BLUE ..

Nice job Lee. Kind of reminds me of stone. I have picked up the dyes at woodcraft several times, looked at the price, then set them back down. Someday!!!!

Baxter - I've started using some of the transtints that I have and when you figure you only use a few drops at a time - the dyes do last a while. The RIT dyes that I use are cheaper but are not as lightfast as the transtint - which is why I am gradually changing over to other types of dye.

I used a baby food jar half filled clean water from my de humidifier and about 20 drops of blue tint. Its pretty potent stuff. (PS, wear gloves because transtint doesnt know the difference between flesh and wood . oops)

Supposedly, it lasts quite awhile too, even when mixed ....

Lee those are some really nice pieces. I do like the color you obtained. Kinda reminds me of some of my late grandmothers jewelry.
