I turn flutes and start with a 1 1/2" square blank. Does anyone have a suggestion as to which jaw set for the Nova G3 would be the best for gripping this safely??. I can turn the ends round to fit but need them to grab more wood than the ones that came in the set that was on sale last yr. A 1" and 2" and a small set of cole jaws came in the promotional package last Nov.

I turn a lot of spindle stuff like ornaments, eggs, scoops, etc. I have the G3 and SN2 and use either the 25 mm or 35 mm bowl jaws for items too small for the 50mm jaws. Both grip the same size tenon 11/32" to 1". Teknatools suggests it will not hold a 1" X 5" piece without tail stock support. The pin jaws are a little longer and can hold up to 6" without support on the TS end. I always put a shoulder on my tenons as that is what provides the real holding strength.

You may want to consider the 35 mm spigot jaws. They go down to about one inch diameter in compression. They also allow a very long spigot (of an inch or more) for gripping a longer unsupported item securely.

I would seriously consider a set of Oneway jaws, the ones that are serrated on the inside. No idea which size would work best for you but I do love Oneway jaws in Supernova2 chucks.

Here is a pic of the Nova 35mm spigot jaws (which are serrated). The Oneway may be better but I don’t know. I have a set of the Nova 45mm spigot jaws and they work fine.
