Well I was cleaning up and sharpening some of the planes I have acquired the last few weeks. Suddenly I have more than I need of course. A couple of them turned out to be type 19 with the y casting. Is there any thing negative I should be aware of with this type? BTW, I used my postal scale and weighed all the planes. 3-7 type 15s - 19s. The heaviest #4 was a type 19 and the heaviest #5 was a type 15. The 5-1/2 weighed almost as much as a #6. Last but not least. The couple of Miller falls I have weigh more than their Stanley counter part. Just being curious of course.

If the planes make a good surface on wood, then all the negatives are just opinions.

I have a type 19 #4. works quite well and can take sub thou shavings... my only complaint is the knob and tote could be nicer.

My first plane was a type 19 no. 4. I tuned it up and put a Hock in it. It works great and still gets quite a bit of use. My only complaint is the amount of slop in the adjustments. They work fine, just have a lot of play.

The back lash in the depth adjuster has nothing to do with when it was made. I have gotten used to it.

Once again Thanks to all. Just living and learning. I was recently told by my other half that I was not an avid woodworker. I was told I was a "rabbid" woodworker.
