This was a fun and frustrating project. This was a great learning experience and the bowl is far from perfect - next one will be better. I had to make a donut chuck and I have practice to do on presentation and sharpening for sure! This is ash, 9 1/2" dia, 7" tall. Comments and criticism welcome.

It's round, and it's in one piece, so I'd say it's a victory! Congrats on the maiden voyage.

Really nice looking donut chuck! You will get a lot of use out of it!

Interesting bowl and seeing as how it is your first - be sure to hang onto it and do a compare a few years from now. You will be amazed at how much changes with lots of turning under your belt!

Have fun!

Looks great from here for your first!
Great grain and coloring in that piece of Ash.

Keith, excellent work - both on the donut chuck and the bowl! The laminated ash made for a nice appearance, and a good first bowl.

Keith, You're off to a great start. That's a pretty large bowl for a first time.

A little tip on laminating bowls. First, try to have the grain all running the same direction during the glue up. Taking it a little farther, try to have the end grain all running the same direction too - ie. all smiling or all frowning.
This will help with movement as the bowl ages, and it will make it easier to turn as your are not fighting grain directions.

For a first bowl I think it's extrordinary, my first bowl looked like a dog dish that had been scraped around the driveway a while. I like your lathe too, I've had my Nova for around 41/2 yrs. and love it.

Looks like you are well on your way. Don't hesitate to try green wood, it has a few advantages. Green cuts much easier than dry, less dusty and better curls, and you get a lot of practice in shaping with roughing out, so that when you are ready to re-turn them, you will have had more experience using the gouge to make fair curves.

Looks good. Nice chuck. Glad you got some of the kinks sorted out. Pretty deep bowl for your maiden voyage! Good job.

Not sure I like the shape but for a first it beats my first. How are you liking the NOVA DVR-XP? I have had mine for about 15 months and love it.
