My first Thompson bowl gouge (3/8") and my first turned tool handle. The handle is 15" long and turned from a piece of Ash. Overall I'm pleased with how it turned out considering it's my first. Making a tool handle from scratch was more work than I thought. Maybe because it was my first. I have a couple more handles to turn for my other Thompson tools so I can get started on my first bowl.

The handle looks great, and that gouge is my favorite of all my Thompson tools! Congrats!

Superb job here. Not only is it a nice work with great detail and finish, but appears like a very functional tool handle and should serve you well

I hope you had some other tools to turn that with Dave...you didn't have to do it handleless did you?;);):D

Looks good. That gouge will be sweet. Some of the most rewarding turning for me has been handles and other things that I use in the shop. Something nice about using something you made.

Thanks for the comments guys. It's nicely balanced and feels great in my hands. My other turning tools are a set of Henry Taylor pen turning tools and a couple of the carbide insert tools. The Henry Taylor's are too small for tackling bowls. The carbide tools are OK but they just don't feel right to me. Aint got no soul or something like that. They don't require any real finesse. I'll keep them around but I prefer a skew and a set of gouges personally.

Thanks again,
Dave

That's a fine looking handle! Among my first projects were handles for Thompson gouges.
