I sure aint one for the fancy stuff, but found a small section of Hickory that had a small burl on it. Too small for a bowl so I tried something new for me. Its not as thin as I would have liked, but now I may actually unbox my Nicol steady rest and try another one soon.

Its 7" tall x 3" wide at the top

Nice job Ken. What a great idea. How did you stabilize the wood?

Thanks

Quinn

Pretty good job Ken. I think that if you had paid a bit more attention to the stem and thinned it out more you would certainly have a keeper on your hands.

Quin,no stabilizing.

Tony, that sucker was moving on me and I knew if I went any thinner on the stem it would be in pieces LOL. I will try again ofcourse, but maybe do a 2 or 3 piece next time.

Single piece Ken? And some cool looking cool looking wood to! 7" is nothing to sneeze at. I think it's a good job given what you had to work with!

It is not thin but is a keeper for sure. Good job showing off the wood's color variations, and you kept the bark on too!

Ken that grain is sweet. I like the whole goblet. I know what you mean on moving I had one move past my head 2 weeks ago.

Great looking wood Ken. The way the colors swirl up the stem is my favorite part. That would have been gone if it had been turned much thinner. Very pretty!

I like it. :) Wow..7" Tall...that's a lot of dazzle. I bet it's really cool in person.

Looks pretty cool! Sure like all the color in the wood!

Did you turn this unsupported or did you use the tailstock for support?

Used the tail stock

I will get better the more I do(I hope) and i'm sure several will end up as real pretty firewood! I also think thicker can work as long as the form works so if i'm unable to get thin I better learn some form LOL!

Ken, you have a great looking piece there. Love the coloring and grain patterns. I would love to find something like that. I am of the opinion that thin is not always appropriate anyway. Depends on the turning and I think thicker was the right choice for this one.
