Well, OK, maybe not that many gloats. :D
I got to go to Totally Turning in Saratoga Springs two weekends ago, and I still get a goofy smile thinking about it. This was my first symposium and I was stoked, and to me is the biggest gloat. First of all, I got to meet creeker's Baxter Smith, Brian Libby, Alan & Lauren Zenreich, and George Guadiane (briefly). Of course I only thought of taking the obligatory photos once, so here it is.

I'm the devilishly handsome one in the middle. ;) :D
Of course to my right is Baxter, the burl king. And to my left, is my friend Bill.
Unfortunately I did miss Cathy Schaewe and Bill Blasic. Bill is actually semi-local to me, so I hope to meet him sometime soon.
I got to take a few laps around the vendor area, and ended up with a small haul (second gloat):

I got a really nice and heavy jacobs chuck, which is a precision piece of machinist equipment and can grip tiny wire sized bits. I picked up some sandpaper from the Sanding Glove, including some abranet discs for my power sander. I'm anxious to give them a try. And last, but certainly not least, I picked up some Ruth Niles bottle stoppers, and one of her mandrels. She's a really nice lady, and has a quality product. I'm looking forward to making some stoppers too. I also got to meet Jim Syvertsen - the guy that owns Australian Burls.com. Great guy, and a heck of a turner too. I talked ;) my friend Bill into buying a small burl to try out. Hehehe. Nothing like a little peer pressure. :D
Of course, the highlight of the weekend was the demonstrations, given by world class turners and world class people. I got to see Andy DiPietro, Curt Theobald, Dale Nish, Richard Raffan, Jennifer Shirley and Giles Gilson. I soaked up as much as I could, and have started to put some of that knowledge to use. I uploaded some of the photos I took in the demos to a picasa album, here (https://picasaweb.google.com/102280518493791878821/TotallyTurning2011?feat=directlink).
I wanted to show one photo here from one of Curt Theobald's demos. Wally D. posted an enormous segmented form done by Ray Allan a week ago, that was incredible in its size and execution. Theobald's piece is also incredible for its size and execution, and a neat counterpoint to Allan's work.

That is my Bill's hand in there for a little scale. :D
I also took more than 140 photos in the instant gallery that I'll get to uploading to my picasa album in the next week or so. I just have to say, that the gallery was unbelievably inspiring. Even the f&%$-work. ;) :D
One other thing I learned, was I have to work of the DOF in my photography. This used to be a hobby of mine several years ago, but I've neglected it lately. I definitely need some more practice in this area.
There were a few other gloats, that are in the album, but not Totally Turning related, so I'll put those in another thread. Thanks for putting up with the long post. :)
