Well, OK, maybe not that many gloats. :D

I got to go to Totally Turning in Saratoga Springs two weekends ago, and I still get a goofy smile thinking about it. This was my first symposium and I was stoked, and to me is the biggest gloat. First of all, I got to meet creeker's Baxter Smith, Brian Libby, Alan & Lauren Zenreich, and George Guadiane (briefly). Of course I only thought of taking the obligatory photos once, so here it is.

I'm the devilishly handsome one in the middle. ;) :D
Of course to my right is Baxter, the burl king. And to my left, is my friend Bill.

Unfortunately I did miss Cathy Schaewe and Bill Blasic. Bill is actually semi-local to me, so I hope to meet him sometime soon.

I got to take a few laps around the vendor area, and ended up with a small haul (second gloat):

I got a really nice and heavy jacobs chuck, which is a precision piece of machinist equipment and can grip tiny wire sized bits. I picked up some sandpaper from the Sanding Glove, including some abranet discs for my power sander. I'm anxious to give them a try. And last, but certainly not least, I picked up some Ruth Niles bottle stoppers, and one of her mandrels. She's a really nice lady, and has a quality product. I'm looking forward to making some stoppers too. I also got to meet Jim Syvertsen - the guy that owns Australian Burls.com. Great guy, and a heck of a turner too. I talked ;) my friend Bill into buying a small burl to try out. Hehehe. Nothing like a little peer pressure. :D

Of course, the highlight of the weekend was the demonstrations, given by world class turners and world class people. I got to see Andy DiPietro, Curt Theobald, Dale Nish, Richard Raffan, Jennifer Shirley and Giles Gilson. I soaked up as much as I could, and have started to put some of that knowledge to use. I uploaded some of the photos I took in the demos to a picasa album, here (https://picasaweb.google.com/102280518493791878821/TotallyTurning2011?feat=directlink).

I wanted to show one photo here from one of Curt Theobald's demos. Wally D. posted an enormous segmented form done by Ray Allan a week ago, that was incredible in its size and execution. Theobald's piece is also incredible for its size and execution, and a neat counterpoint to Allan's work.

That is my Bill's hand in there for a little scale. :D

I also took more than 140 photos in the instant gallery that I'll get to uploading to my picasa album in the next week or so. I just have to say, that the gallery was unbelievably inspiring. Even the f&%$-work. ;) :D

One other thing I learned, was I have to work of the DOF in my photography. This used to be a hobby of mine several years ago, but I've neglected it lately. I definitely need some more practice in this area.

There were a few other gloats, that are in the album, but not Totally Turning related, so I'll put those in another thread. Thanks for putting up with the long post. :)

Brian, looks like you had a great time, made some good purchases - and, best of all, learned a bunch. Always great meeting other creekers, too. That Curt Theobald piece is incredible!!

Brian,
Sorry we didn't run into each other. I bought one of those Jacobs chucks also as it was a great deal. Hey join WOW and join the WOW Exchange next year. I believe that 22 turners participated this year and my trade partner this year was Richard Raffan. The exchange is a lot of fun. Maybe we'll run into each other next year or perhaps at Pembrook if they bring in a demonstrator this year.

Looks like a great time to be had, and meeting other creekers had to be a really neat bonus.

Great way to spend a weekend Brian! We don't have any of those in California, or I'm not plugged into the right source. Cool pics and some nice loot to boot!

Lauren and I got to meet two Brians and one Cathy from the Creek... we missed some of the others.

As for tool/toys, I bought one of the Jacobs chucks on Saturday, and went back and got another one on Sunday... Lauren should have one too, eh?

Then again, Lauren came out of Jennifer Shirley's session and was heading towards a Paul Petrie session on piercing, and asked me about an air turbine. I mentioned that an NSK Presto would be my preference, and I believe that it was Brian E. that said "Kurt's selling them at his booth". I overlooked that because he didn't have them on display. So a couple of minutes later we had a Presto, regulator/filter, and a set of burs.

We also picked up some stuff from Ruth Niles. She is a very nice lady, we met her last year, and created a pendant as a surprise gift for her.

Add some striped ebony, gabon ebony, padauk... an extra Bionic face shield (for away games), sanding pads, calipers.... the list of stuff that found its way back to NJ was well rounded.

Nice pickups! I didn't spend as much time in the vendors area as I would have liked. If you tried to get a good seat at all the presentations and spend time in the gallery too, the shopping time was limited. Maybe that was just as well!:D It was great to meet you in person Brian. Now you are more than just some person who sent me the oak bowl on my living room table.;)

Thanks for the replies, everyone. :)

You can't pin that one on me - it must have been the other Brian. :D

I know what you mean, Baxter. Bill & I had to blow-off a rotation to go and explore the vendor area. I'm thinking I might send an email to our hosts, asking about a different organizational set-up for future events. Maybe open the vendor area an hour or so later so that it could remain open past 5pm. And maybe even close the doors to walk-ins at 5, or a little earlier, so that TT attendees can have a chance to look around an make some impulse :D purchases.

I've been on WOW now for a few months, but have been a little intimidated to post any work, but that is going to change. I was in the exchange room, standing next to Jake Debski, so I got to witness the fun and the incredible turnings. I even offered to transport his trade back to Buffalo. :D He was the one that mentioned I talk to you, since I want to get a hollowing system, and said you have one.

I am hoping we can get a demonstrator into Pembroke later this year. I'm the club's treasurer, so I was thinking of taking the lead on getting the next one lined up. I spoke with Kurt H. at the symposium about his help, and I'll be talking to Jim Rupracht about it at our meeting next week.

Brian - sure looks like you had some fun and even managed to find a few much needed accessories for your shop! I have yet to make it to a symposium yet - any symposium - but am looking forward to the AAW 25th Anniversary one! I plan on spending most of my time in the vendors area because I don't have access to anything like it up here.
