This is from that maple crotch wood gloat I posted recently. Several of you guys have bugged me to "see what I can make from it" .... so here's a teaser ...

This one is a first for me in that I went from chainsaw to photograph in about 90 minutes!!!! The trick for me was using a better sharpened bowl gouge (vari-grind stealth gloat).

I fully expect this thing to warp, and I want to see exactly what it does. I got in a hurry (dinner was ready) and I didnt finish the inside bottom correctly, its got a little hump

Anyway, this wood looks like its gonna be special! Thanks for letting me ramble and for looking

Lee, you should be proud of this one - a very nice job! The wood has a lot of character, and you sure didn't waste any time - 90 minutes!! You are a bowl machine!

Getting a side grind on the gouge is all the difference in the world ... I have no idea whether its right or not, but I think the whole thing came out in one long curlie !!!!

Great wood and bowl Lee. The varigrind made things a lot easier for me as well!

That's a great looking bowl, and to go from saw to bowl in 90 min is even better. Love the spalting effect.

I hate to nit-pick Lee, and maybe I missed it, but how big is the bowl? Other than that...It's a great looking bowl!! Aren't sharp tools the best to work with!!

90 mnutes? you put those few minutes to good use! By the way, the hump is so the peas all go to the outside & can be trapped and captured.

Very nice. Sheesh...90 minutes. I can't do anything in 90 minutes. :)

Well done and done quickly. The spalt lines look like county lines or some kind of map. Nice looking wood and bowl.

and THIS is the reason I dont usually hurry !!!! Its about 5" diameter and 2" deep. I am not a fan of hurrying, but I was only interested in seeing how it would react once-turned .. so I KNEW if I spent the requisite time to cut properly and do it right, then it split, I'd be disappointed!

My gut is telling me that this is about the worst looking chunk of wood from this tree, so that means I will have fun with all the goodies I can make. It may even force me into hollow forms ... ut-oh ...

oh and the sharp tools, mmmmmm ..... its like I was using a spoon before !!!

Thanks for sharing. Looks like a nice little bowl, and that wood looks like it's ready to turn... If you've got a lot more of it, you'd better get to roughing before it warms up too much. The next step on the spalting train is rotville, and I'd hate to see that stuff get too punky.

You are a turning machine - at least for a day. Love the form and the wood. It looks so much larger in the pics. I was surprised with the size.
