A friend came over yesterday and said he had something I might could use. It's a nice looking vacum pump. It works great. All I need is some hoses and fittings and a little know how. Any idea what I would need to see if this would work on a lathe? I turned it on and it has good suction. Other than what you see I know nothing about it. All I know is it was "FREE".

Donny, see if it will pull 17"HG vacuum and you're set.

Donny see if this helps. http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?162882-My-New-Vacuum-Chuck&highlight=
You don't have to do it up exactly like this but it should give you an idea of what all you need to do.

That is a laboratory vac pump that should pull a serious amount of vacuum. There might even be rebuild kits still available. That pump cost sreious $$ when new. Head for their website and check things out. I have 2 old Welch's from the hospital where I used to work. Not sure if they work though. That should really suck!

You got a pump and that's good. But that is only one piece of what you will need. Best advice I can give you is to go here:

and read everything.

I set mine up using one of these:

http://www.packardwoodworks.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=packard&Product_Code=110902&Category_Code=lathes-acc-vc-holdfast

and it works very well.

There are a few threads about vac systems if you do a search you will find them. Steve Schlumpf has a very thorough thread including part numbers of the brass fittings you will need, including the part numbers from Menard's - if you have one in your town.
