Hi,
I have a 22'x25' shop and would like to add more lumber storage. I have only two walls available and are already in use. The other walls are windows (6' height) almost the entire wall and a garage door. The only reasonable place to put a rack is just inside the garage door so it would have to be connected to the floor. Does anyone have any photos of floor-based lumber racks?

I have no idea if this is what you're looking for, but here's my quick'n'dirty lumber rack. All load is carried on the floor, although the top is tied to the ceiling joists to prevent it falling over. Each vertical post is a pair of 2x6's, with spacers between, slightly thicker than a 2x6. The verticals are "scalloped" to engage with 1" dia pegs in the arms.

Good points are that it was fast and easy to make; bad point is that it is not very space-efficient. The arms are thicker than necessary for all but the heaviest loads; I've been meaning to cut some of them down.

Hi John,
I like your lumber rack but I would not be able to tie the top to the ceiling because the garage door would be opened occassionally.

Paul Anthony's book, "Smart Workshop Solutions," page 41, has a free standing modular that was originally featured in AWW somewhere in the mid ninities. I built one when I taught shop. (I left teaching in 1997) Maybe someone here who is a lot smarter than me could scan it for you.

I built some wall shelves for storage, but felt I needed more. What I did was use one of these from Harbor Freight.

I placed it in front of my overhead door and can wheel it around if I need to. It holds a suprising amount of wood, and I'm sure can be expanded more if I wanted to modify it.

Just a thought

Bob, that's a great solution, I just might steal that one.

I encountered the same problem and built this rack.
