189805Kathy showed in her thread her progress on a gavel for our club's monthly challenge. Thi is my version.

189806The head and handle are attached via hand chased threads. I made the thread chaser from a grade 8 bolt from "Big Orange".

189807Because of the thread chaser I'm using I had to chase the threads on the handle from the end rather than the side, they're also endgrain so much more difficult to chase because of the very short fibers.

189808If I had to do it again I'd make the handle a bit thicker, it's pretty light for the size and weight of the head.

189809The finish so far is 1 coat of Watco Danish Oil. The wood is Sipo, a variety of Mahogany.

Thanks,
Jason

Nice gavel, and cool threads. I agree with you on the handle, and maybe add a little to the length too. Still a good gavel, though.

Very nice Jason, I agree with you on the handle. But those chased threads came out very well, better then I can do with my expensive Sorby set, I still have been unable to make a useable set of threads with mine, for now I have put it away to be revisted at a later date.

Nice series of photos! Gavel sure looks good - real rich color to it! I will agree that the handle seems somewhat small for the size of the head... but it still works!

Jason, you nailed the design of the head - very well done. And, the housed joinery of the handle and head is evidence of a quality turning. I agree with you and others on the proportions of the handle, but you should be very happy with this piece!

A very nice addition to any ones podium. However, I ditto other's comments on the handle except that the threading is great.
