During the big ice storm last month, we lost a big limb off one of the big Black Walnuts in the front yard. I was very excited until I saw that it split lengthwise as it broke. I was able to salvage a piece about 4" X 15". There's a lot of contrast between sapwood and heartwood here.
Here are a wine stopper and a weed pot. The weed pot is 1bout 2.5" x 6.5" with a CA finish. Bottle stopper has Tung oil finish.
The weed pot tried several times to get broke. The foot cracked once, the neck cracked as I was trying to widen the hole for a bud vase. There's a dent in the top where I dropped it once too.
But, when I told the wife I wasn't sure it would make it she said, "My vase? It better make it." She likes it better than anything else I've made. And that's all that matters.
