Mark,

It depends on what price your budget for a lathe can handle. There are many choices out there in all price ranges. A good choice in my opinion would be a Jet 1442VS or a Jet 1642VS. Not only can you turn bowls on these lathes but you wouild have the versatility to make lots of other stuff, from small to large. I upgraded my Jet 1236 to a 1642VS about a year ago and I really love it. Dominic Greco did a Jet 1642VS Review (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/articles/6/) that would be worth reading.

I haven't the expreience with larger lathes, so I'll let the others talk to you about them.

The best books and tapes IMHO are be Richard Raffan, however there many other ones that are very good. There is a very good tape made by one of our members, Bill Grumbine, that is for sale.

Hope this helps.

Mark,

Someone already mentioned it but Bill Grumbine's video or DVD is a great product. www.wonderfulwood.com (http://www.wonderfulwood.com)
It is worth a look in my opinion.
