But I don't. I have a Ridgid 6" jointer but would love this DJ-20. Seems like a good price. About 1/2 of current retail.

Agreed.

The problem with my, and -- presumably -- your JP0610 is that they're awfully darned good.

If it wasn't, I'd be shopping 8" jointers, too !

Is yours a "need," for some particular reason, or ... just casually shopping ?

I just always look a the tools for sale at that site. My Ridgid jointer like your works fine. Like most, I think bigger is better LOL. If I got an 8" I would probably think 12" is better yet :)
I really have a nice, well equiped shop. I am lucky.

Seems like it might be a bit on the high side for used. Having said that, I have a DJ-20 which I bought used and it has been an extraordinarily reliable and solid machine. Nothing against the Rigid as I have never used one but if there is anyway physically possible to make room in your shop for a DJ-20 you should at least consider it. Different animal entirely from a 6" jointer.

Its not that much bigger but, not to worry; that thing is over-priced.

I like mine. DJ-20, that is. The going price here in the Bay Area for the Invicta / older Taiwanese ones is $800-$900+. I fished for a year to get mine.

Hey John, if you like the DJ-20, GO FOR IT! It's only 2 feet longer than your 6" Rigid. I love my '98 DJ-20, bought about 4 years ago at auction for $675--a steal, I think!

$900 may be a bit high, but the ad just posted on the 29th. Call and offer $750. See how firm the seller is. You never know 'til you ask. If you don't buy it, some lesser human might!

John - FWIW -

I've always beena bit tight for space in the 2 basement shops I've had, and the jointer is usually the bugaboo - it requires a lot of free space for infeed + outfeed of longer boards, but unlike my floor-standing surface planer, it is not easily mobile. I don't know what your shop looks like, but I used to have my 8" PM along a wall in the hallway just outside the shop - ran a shop vac on it. A bit inconvenient, but it worked out fine.

I don't know know if you are looking for a push, but I have e DJ-20 in my basement shop, andi love it. It's really the first size of jointer that gives what I think of as an industrial performance. It's not just the 2" of width you gain on a 6"' it's the length and weight too. I've used a lot of jointers from 4" modell makers jointers to a 20" monster, and the 8" does 90% or more of everything i do on a regular basis with ease. I loved my general long bed 6"' but I sure don't miss it!

Getting the DJ-20 down the stairs was no joy, but since then it's been a pleasure.

Price seems quite high for our region based on what I saw while shopping for a used 8" jointer in this neck of the woods.

there are two on woodweb right now. The dj20- like most pre china delta stuff seems to retain some resale value. Was a time when Taiwan was looked down upon. Now it is considered a step up, as was Brazil before it. My only complaint is that on mine the table lips were ground with a droop of about .003 so it never seemed really right until I figured out I had to set to the iron part of the tables. Slow learner. I have a 16" Porter- the best ever- but won't give up the dj20. The faster cutterhead makes edge jointing that is really good. The size is a great compromise. And the cast iron is well seasoned on them by now. Dave

I had a DJ-20 for a long time. Mine had straight knives with the Esta disposible blade system, and an HTC mobile base. It was a great jointer. I sold it two years ago for $1,000 when I found an old Rockwell F3a 12" jointer - same style as the DJ-20, only bigger. In my opinion the $900 price they were asking in your ad was reasonable if the machine was in good shape. That being said, from what I understand the Grizzly 8" jointer is similar quality and about the same price for a new machine. I guess it depends on whether you prefer green or gray.

On the DJ-20, is there a way to tell what year it is from the serial number?

Thanks,
