Hi all,

I have a neighbor up the street who is taking down an ambrosia maple that was threatening his house. About 80 feet tall, and at the widest point 50+ inches in diameter!!! It had a major split in the biggest fork, and that necessitated it coming down.

Anyway, I only had about 30 minutes to get a few blanks and will be going back for more probably tomorrow or Thursday. His son has already cut and split 4 heaping truck loads of firewood, [his truck has railed sides, and it was stacked higher than the cab] and I told him I wanted some trunk sections. I can have all I want, but don't have room but for maybe a pickup load, so at least I will have some maple in the drying process!

That is a pretty nice gloat! I keep watching craigs list for my area in hopes I will find someone cutting down a tree or something, I am tired of buying all of my wood, but so far all of the wood give-aways are pallets, scrap plywood, rotten cottonwoods...etc...nothing worth while. Have fun turning that looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Pretty nice haul, Roger! The beetle marks aren't real heavy, but they should show well in the finished product. And, the price was real good!!!!

Nice haul. Looks good and fresh. Seal it and it will make some nice big bowls. It should keep you busy for a while.

Nice haul, Roger! If you're lucky, maybe you'll get a little spalting color to join those ambrosia stains. I can't wait to see what you turn out of that stuff.

Nice gloat! If you run out of room inside to try and dry, leave some outside and you can have spalted ambrosia maple!

Sounds like a plan to me, Baxter! Thanks!

Sweeet...the best wood is free wood. That is a very nice haul! Expect to see some nice roughs from that.

Thats a big honkin' tree. I'd be after some of those crotch sections!

Roger,

How far, down the valley, are you from Winchester? I get down that way pretty often.

Nice haul! Take more than you can handle:D. Getting some of that spalted would be a great idea.

Excellent score Roger! Get all you can - store it, spalt it, turn it or give some away at your club meetings - but don't let anymore become firewood if you can help it!
