A long time ago I acquired a gorgeous chunk of Redheart BL Maple quilt. It was about 7 inches by just a little over 2 inches. A bit too thin for a good bowl. I decided to add an 8 pc. segmented rosewood rim and a matching foot. This not only added a bit of height to the bowl but framed the beautiful wood. The bowl is about 6.5 x 2.5 inches.

I liked this piece so well that I decided to add it to my collection of keepers. It was turned about 15 years ago.

That is absolutely spectacular. The two woods go together very well.

WOW! What a beautiful bowl Wally! I can see why you kept it! Excellent idea of adding mass to the bowl and framing the quilted maple! Sure is pretty!

Wow Wally!! The depth of that maple is really something! Did it darken over time or is it still about the same as 15 years ago? Glad you kept it!!

This is a great looking bowl. The rosewood rim really does a nice job of framing the maple.

Wally, what a great idea!! Just very nice, and the perfect size for a rim. I have turned BLM burl, but is "Redheart BLM" the same thing??

I like this one a lot! Lots of ideas here.

Jim, I think the color has stayed about the same. Wish I had more wood like that.

John, once in a while BL maple has a center that's red instead of the usual near white. When it's wet it's very red. Lumber mills don't like it much but woodturners sure do. Some of it is even darker than this one. I have in my collection of keepers a bowl with outstanding very dark fiddleback maple. I'll post a pic some day.

15 years and still looks incredible. Says a lot about doing it right the first time! Great job.

Wally that's one nice piece of Maple & the rim just sets-it-off. Great combination on a form well-done. Thanks

Beautiful bowl Wally. The darker rim and foot frame it very nicely. Definetly a nice keeper.

Thanks folks for your kind comments. I have a love affair with beautiful wood. When I was a small kid we used wood for cooking and heating. The wood came from our own woodlot. I can remember going through piles of wood and stashing away pieces that I liked.
