I built a shaker style hutch for our kitchen when we first built the house. Now that I'm retired and have some time, my wife suggested that a new hutch for that corner might be a nice project.

This is the existing shaker style hutch.

This is a drawing of what I decided to build. I tried to fancy it up a bit from the original.
Here are some pictures of the progress so far. Thanks for looking.

She's going to be a beauty Ed. My next project is a hutch for our kitchen. I hope you don't mind if I borrow a couple of ideas from yours.

Nice piece. I may be showing my ignorance here but, what the heck. What are the dados in the shelves for?

I'm going to guess it has something to do with displaying plates - Maybe put some vertical dividers in those dado's for adjustability?

Jim,
Matt had it right. I'm going to put about 5 vertical dividers in there to hold all of the stuff that is piled up in the present hutch. Trying to make better use of the space.

I spent all day today making one door. As the saying goes, "I work slow but I do poor quality work to make up for it".

I put a post on a while back about my wood furniture clamps. They really have worked out well.

I'm going to work on some fluted columns tomorrow. More pictures to follow.

After about a week of being down with my back, I'm finally starting to work on this project again. Today I finished up the fluted columns that are going on the front of the hutch.

The divider blocks are still to be made. I'm going to dress them up with some sort of design but it's not finalized yet. More to follow as I get it done. Thanks for looking.

Ed, this is coming along very nicely. Is this going to fit in the corner? Also, I noticed in the photo's that the shelves seem to be bowing from the stress relief that occurred after milling the slots. Maybe its just the picture - I hope so. If they are bowing it may not be too late to add some stiffeners to pull them flat.

Pat,
You are right, they were bowing a little. I straightened them out when I added the back and hopefully they will stay. You can see in the photo that one of the sticks that I used to straighten the top shelf is still there. :-)

Well, I've made a little more progress. I have all the little details done and I'm about ready to start staining.

Ah, Sanding! The fun part!!
It looks great, Ed. I was wondering what you were going to do with the windows. I love the turnings.

Thanks Bruce. Yes, sanding, the fun part. I've done most of it as I went but there are always places that need extra work. The trick is catching them before you put the stain on. I've made a little more progress today. I put two coats of water based poly on the top shelves. I wanted to leave it natural and stain the outside a red Mahogany to match the kitchen. I love the water based poly. It didn't darken the Cherry at all after it dried. Here are a few more pictures.

Almost finished. These pictures aren't very good but they will give you an idea. I'll post some more after it's in the house. The first picture shows the difference in color between the water based poly that I used on the top shelves and regular oil based poly that I used in the bottom. The outside is just stained at this point, no finish so the color didn't show up right. It will look better after a few coats of poly.

Ed - this is a great looking piece. Love the details, ie: the carving, the columns, and that little fence like design you have for the top and the sides.
