So my university is having a student art competition, and I was asked by one of the art professors to submit one of my bowls, I made this one special for this show. It's Coolibah burl, approximately 10" in diameter, and 3.75" high, the sides are about 5/16" sanded to 600grit, WOP and buffed to a high gloss... :D

I'm hoping this inspires John Keeton to give some of the Australian burls a try again, yes it was hard as a stone (and had about as much moisture in it) but it was worth all the extra sharpening, and all the extra time it took me to turn it!

The show is this week I will let y'all know how it turns out, I'm not expecting to win anything, but I guarantee I am the only turner in the show, and it's a good way to get some exposure! Thanks for looking, as allways C&C Welcome and appreciated!

Rick, good luck with the show - this piece has it all, and should do well. I am still open to the idea of the Aussies, and I hope to see some up close at St. Paul. Hopefully, my patience and skill levels have increased a bit since the last go at them, and the end results are certainly amazing! Those folks grow some awesome wood.

Good luck, Rick... I don't think you'll need it with such a nice looking piece. I love that the rim seems to have distorted a bit... It just adds to the character of the piece. Lovely finish.

I think John will give them a try at some point, but he's likely got about 10 tons of claro and BLM from Mike Smith that need to be worked through first.:D

Rick if you don't win .... DEMAND a recount! That is top shelf. Best of luck and keep us posted.

Yeah unfortunately the sap wood distorted a small amount there, It sanded a bit different' than the heart of the burl, and once it was done it was too late. live and learn! Considering of all the things that I could have done wrong with this one, It's an acceptable "oops" in my book!

John, it really does require more patience, and since it is so hard, it really forced me to focus on tool technique, there really isn't any "cheating" by not riding the bevel especially on the transition and the bottom of the bowl. I think it has made me a better turner for having worked with it... which is good because I have 3 more large pieces of Coolibah, and two pieces of Jarrah to turn!

Thanks Steve, I will definitely let everyone know how it goes, I'm excited to be "in the show" :D

Hey Rick, good luck with the show. That piece really shows off your handiwork, as well as that of Mother Nature.

That's a nice piece of Aussie burl. I like the simple lines, and cross my fingers to hope you are received well with this piece at the show. I've turned one aussie burl...and yep...like turning stone. It was a mallee, I think, red or brown??

Again, good luck with show, you have a good eye for shape...you'll be fine.

That's really pretty wood, and you did it justice. (Makes me re-think my 'no australian wood' rule. Which is a shame, because I kept picking up pieces of aussie burl at totally turning, then remembering the dust and distress of (partially) turning the one piece ... and now I remember why I didn't buy any.)

Your patience and perseverance were rewarded! Nice job!
