I've never turned a pepper mill and have decided to do a couple. For those of you who have turned lots of pepper mills, what in your opinion is the best mechanism available and where do you get them?

Thanks, I value your opinions....

These are the "new" standard...assembly is a little more involved.

My preference is the Crushgrind ceramic with a shaft. Really smooth and consistent grind. I order them from Packard.

Another vote for shaft crush-grind. No knob on top.

Wally, you can get them at Woodcraft in Tucson..... The prices are the same as the catalog, but you must think about the cost of gas. It might be cheaper to order them from the above mentioned sources, rather than drive to get them... Jerry (in Tucson)

Wally, I do a decent number of mills and I have been using the Crushgrind mechanism for a couple of years with good results. A number of my buyers are people I interact with on a regular basis (friends, family, my Sensei) and if there was a problem, I would know.

You need to plan things out a little more with the Crushgrind than with more conventional hardware.

Have fun!

Wally I have made a number of them with this mechanism and have excellent luck with them. I think any quality unit will do.

Wally,

From reading on the net, the Puegot is the best mechanism made, but they do not sell them retail. The wife and I were invited to a friends house for supper about a month ago, and they had a mill with a Puegot mechanism. It worked super, and from what I could see, the quality lives up to the fanfare.

Having said that, I'm about 50 or 60 mills old now, and have used the Chef Specialties mechanism for all, including the one in the kitchen that has had daily cooking and table use for over 3 years, without any noticable loss of efficiency. I've not used the Crushgrind, and don't know about the quality of the mechanism first hand, but it has very good reputation. It also requires a larger assortment of forstner bits and a more involved assembly including epoxy at some point (or so I'm told). I think Papa Herm uses Crushgrind mechanisms.

Here's another excellent source for grind hardware. https://www.chefspecialties.com/catalog/index.php/cPath/18?osCsid=4e46e5b8b562c712e991908d7ee73f79

I buy mine from Packard simply because they are 'made in the USA.every little bit helps, and they are stainless steel/ Max.
