Last year John Keeton sent me a beautiful piece of green Ambrosia Maple and I wanted to post the result.

Thanks John! That wood takes an amazing finish!

Ambrosia Maple with Ebony finial, 6 ½” to top of finial x 5 ½” diameter x 1/16” thick. Sanded to 400 grit and has several coats of gloss wipe-on poly. After waiting well over a week (closer to 3), it was buffed and given a coat of Renaissance wax.

Nothing to critique here....only the best of compliments on a wonderfully shaped piece with an excellent finial with an equally fine finish. I think this is what most creekers are used to seeing
when it comes to your work Steve. Fine piece, well done. Thanks

Steve, the form is spot on, beautiful shape and an amazing looking finish on it!!! The finial looks to be perfectly sized for the piece but I think the detail on it may suit the highly polished nature of the form if it were a bit sharper?

But it doesn't look green?? Classic "Steve" form and the simple finial is really artistic...each emblishment has a lot of character. When is the next gallery opening?

Wonderful piece, Steve.........thanks for "modeling" how it should be done! [taking mental notes as I type...;):D] Great finial by the way....nice and thin...:D .......

Ambrosia has such character doesn't it?! Congratulations on a well executed form.....as you always do! :)

That's lovely, Steve. It just kinda stands right up. There is a definition at the shoulder that gives this form "authority" while still maintaining a smooth transition into the finial. I think this is just about the nicest piece I have seen from you.

You certainly did that wood justice. A very nice piece!

I love the form, and your finishes are among the nicest around. I've been more attacted to other finials you've done... Perhaps as Johnny suggested, I prefer a little more crispness in the detailing.

Do you have to weight it down to keep it from floating away? At 1/16", it can't weigh much... That's impressive and way beyond my reach at this point.

All in all, it's a great looking piece. Thanks for sharing.

Steve, "you done it proud" as my hillybilly roots would say!! I still have a few pieces of that wood, and this one makes me want to dig into it. Great form, excellent proportions on the finial, and the style of the finial seems to work well for me.

Great work - must be the Jet 1642!!;) I am hoping that is part of it!:p

Thanks very much for all the kind words everyone - I appreciate it!

I wanted to try something a little different on the finial this time around and that was to try and capture some of the element of the beetle stain within the wood. Best way to describe the stain would be a 'blob' and when you look at it - I think I captured it quite well! Ha Ha!

This has to be one of the lightest weight forms I have turned! I have no idea what it weighs but it ain't much! Feels somewhat like you are holding an egg shell...

A beautiful piece Steve. Love the form and that glossy finish is just right for it. I've turned a HF or two but can't imagine getting down to 1/16" wall thickness and still have something remaining to take off the lathe (in one piece that is)! Well done Sir!...Bill...
