Someone mentioned discomfort with plane totes.
Here a couple of images of plane totes and the changes made to Stanley totes over time.
The first is an image of a type 6 #4-1/2 with my hand around it and a type 7 #7 with the same tote.

Notice that I only have two fingers gripping the tote. It is uncomfortable to get my pinky in on the grip due to extra wood in the bend.
Here are a couple of later totes. I think type the on the #8 is a type 10 or later tote.

The grip on the #5 is a replacement from the 1950s if my information is correct. Both of these totes have had a little material removed from the bend area to accommodate my little finger. I can get four fingers around both of these though the newer tote on the #5 has just a hair more room.
