A few years back my uncle gave me a few pieces of firewood he saved from his woodburner. I finally have a project in mind and cut it up today. I even found some curly stuff. Since it wasn't sealed it has some checks and splits but I still got nice nice sized pieces that will be perfect for a jewelry box I'm building.

Hey nice! But what is it? Looks like walnut sorta, but who burns that?

Definitely walnut. No idea how it burns but my uncle recognized that's what it was and pulled it out. He saved it a few years trying to come up with something to do with it and then gave it to me.

You'd be disgusted by what good woods get tossed into fireplaces...

Great looking stuff. I every now and again pick out Mesquite or Pecan from the firewood pile for projects. So far so good.... But nothing anywhere near as nice as that!

Great score and some really nice looking material there.

Pretty much any wood burns, and walnut burns very nicely. Every tree has limbs, even walnut. My woodstove likes them.

Very nice, Matt!

Every Fall, I help my father-in-law split a ton of wood for the upcoming winter. Usually it's just oak, but last year his log supplier dropped off eight 10' walnut logs, the smallest of which was about 20" in diameter!! It broke my heart...

How long are you going to keep it stickered, Matt?

Not long because I only have about 4 weeks to finish the project. It's been cut for years so I think it should be plenty dry.

Some progress...

What I paid for the curly maple more than offsets the free walnut. I still need to make the door for the right side which will be a walnut frame with a CM panel. I'm waiting to glue up that side and the top until that is made so I can mortise for hinges.

The dovetails aren't particularly good but won't look too bad with some slivers slipped in a few places and walnut-and-glue filler.

Man does the helical head do a nice job on that curly maple!

Curly maple and Walnut is abut the only thing I will build with anymore. What a find and thank God it didn't get burned up.
