While hunting today, I saw a Stanley 4 1/2 Heavy. The seller wanted $200, but was claiming it is worth quite a bit more. It was in nice shape. Parked next to it was a 5 1/4 also in nice shape (or is that 5 1/2...the junior jack). Anyway, is the seller blowing smoke? I read a little on Blood and Gore and learned that the 4 1/2H is indeed uncommon...but is it $200 uncommon?
I have no need for the plane, and I'm not going to drop that kind of dime for a shelf piece. I'm just curious.

It's probably worth that to a collector if it's all original and in really good shape. The 4 1/2 sells at quite a premium compared to a plain 4 and the 4 1/2 Heavy is quite rare. Try to talk the seller down a bit, buy it and put it on eBay. If I ran into one for that price and in good shape, I'd buy it.

The 5 1/4 is known as a junior jack - but it's not all that uncommon. A 5 1/2 is pretty common and doesn't bring much.

Other wise its just a T17 most likely

Thanks. I may be stopping there again next week. There are two other stores on the same block, and I didn't have time yesterday to visit them.
Side note...if anyone is interested in one of these (and it indeed turns out to be a real 4 1/2H) I would more than happy to play middle man and pick it up.

Do you want it as a collector, or do you want it to use?

The extra weight on the 4 1/2 doesn't really do much to add to performance. It's not going to have the super fine mouth and the angle that a heavier infill will have. Not that all infills have a super fine mouth and a steeper pitch, but the ones that make for a "thought free" smoother do.

I don't actually want it (well...I'd like to but it doesn't fit me financially). It piqued my curiosity when I saw the price. I know that a lot of dealers try to mark everything as "rare". So I thought I'd ask the experts about it.

normal 4 1/2s sell for $100-$150 in good condition my guess is this is worth double or triple no problem but since they where only sld in the UK in the 20s I doubt its a real H model but if it is you can double your money at eBay
