I had a grab a couple days ago. Just thought I'd share, because I know you guys don't get these..... 187354
It's Mesquite, almost 8" OD, and 12 3/4" long. Notice the broken spud at the center. It broke and sent the piece sailing , but it hit the tool rest and died right there.... ..... I think I was lucky that time..... Jerry (in Tucson)

I'd say that was a MEGA grab!! I assume you weren't hurt. That's the most important thing.

Glad you weren't hurt because that one would have left a mark!

Jerry, Damn!!! You almost hit the Turners 360 Degree Award. Not many have dared to go there. Of course, you know, you have squandered the opportunity to get the award. You only get one chance, then you have to turn safe.

Just curious, but was it a bowl gouge, and you caught the wing?

It was a 1/2" spindle gouge. I thought I'd work the end, and a spindle gouge would be ok, but apparently not. I really should join a club, and get some other veiws on turning instead of going it alone and gleaning information from SMC. I learned to flintknap in 1969, self taught until 1987, got some hands on instruction then, and got some one on one instruction in 2001. From there my flintknapping improved 200-300%, and now I can produce some almost perfect points.. I'm sure joining a club and watching others turn would improve my abilities. ....... jERRY (In Tucson)
