This piece came from a cut on a large tree about 36 inches in diameter down near the ground. The piece is 8 inches high by 12 inches wide. I finished it with the tung oil, varnish, turpentine mixture and then buffed it with the Beal System. This post is in response to how well cedar will look if one turns it. Hope it helps you make up your mind to try some. I will say that some cedar will crack, I have even heard it crack while I was working with it. I put CA glue in the crack, hit it with accelerator, then keep going.

Now that looks perfect. Makes me want to run out and buy a bigger lathe.
Thanks for sharing the pic.

As always, Glenn, your work is just terrific whether in cedar, cherry, poplar, magnolia or any of the other species you work. :) In your hands any wood comes out looking beautiful... :)

Beautiful! Cedar is one of my favorite woods. Yeah, it might crack sometimes and it can be a little soft for anything that is "used" much like pens, but it has such gorgeous color that I use it anyway. Plus it makes the shop smell so good.
