I'm looking for a book that describes period church woodwork devices like trefoils etc. along with appropriate carvings. IIRC there is (was?) a reprint of a (Victorian/Edwardian?) period book of general woodwork which included a chapter specifically on church work. I don't believe it's Hasluck I'm thinking of but could be wrong. Sorry to be so vague.... Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Don't know about a book, but you would probably find this guy's carving blog quite interesting:

http://pfollansbee.wordpress.com/

He's got umpteen-zillion examples of carving reproductions, some of them from churches....

Jim,

I never read it, but Lee Valley used to have a book called "Specialized Joinery" edited by Richard Greenhalgh.

church fittings (pews, benches and bench ends, pulpits, tracery moldings, etc.)

They no longer offer it, but maybe you can get it used.

Good Luck.

Thanks. This is very close to what I was thinking about, altho not the exact book it may be close enough. Other booksellers appear to carry it BTW.

Follansbee is a wealth of information if you peruse his blog. As I perused a couple of his entries, he's listed several books on period furniture.

It's worth a look.

Jim, I think the book you were referring to is George Ellis's "Modern Practical Joinery". A more recent book with an excellent chapter on "Ecclesiastical Joinery and Fitments" is "Contract Joinery" by Ken Austin. I'd want both if I was doing Church work. If you're going to do carving, I'd go for "Pugin's Gothic Ornament" too (from Dover Publications).

Here is a site that is worth the visit but must get his catalog because he refuses to post everything on the web. He is eccentric and the catalogs are great. I have no connection other than a happy customer. Getting the catalog is more than entertaining enough to get a few books a year to keep it comming.

All the books I have recieved have been very high quality.

Checking out the land of Gingery link is a must. He provided the quote in my sig line.
