View Full Version : Small "Round" Oscillating Sander??

Does anyone make a small round oscillating sander?

Looking for something to do the inside of small router bowels. The triangle sanding pad on a Fein type machine is too big. I am looking for something round and about 2" in diameter.

I have ground the corners off of the triangle sanding pad but it still sometimes hits the wall of the bowl and nicks it.

I also have tried my little Grex rotary sander and also pad on an electric drill but they all leave swirl marks.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Jim

Take a look at scuff balls, they look to be more for buff-out but you might be able to sand down to your fine grit and take out any swirls with them.

I used these on my bowls and it worked out good, you do have to keep it moving and the last pass has to be really light or you will get marks.

Tom - I haven't tried those. I don't know how small they go, so they may not get in the corners near the edge. I'll check them out.

Bill - I do have a set of those. That's what I get the swirl marks with at 220 grit. I'll have to admit, I have not tried a "really light" pass on the last pass though.

I was really hoping someone made a 2" or so orbital sander with about a 3" reach.

Thanks,
Jim

Maybe you can find something like these with a mesh for "sanding"
or use them to do a final buff-out similar to the Beall system.

Another option, big bucks tho.

Like Bill, I use the "New Wave" discs but my rig is 2". This obviously doesn't oscillate but a good hand motion with a slower speed (400 - 1000 rpm) drill motor does a real nice job.

I have the Grex and the New Wave. I have a Festool, but it's 5". It's my go to sander. Not ready for that big of an investment at the moment(I don't think:rolleyes:).

Can someone shed some light on the Metabo brand???? I'm not familiar with it at all.

Thanks,
Jim

If you have adequate shop air, Chicago Pneumatic makes a small random orbit sander with 2" and 3" backing pads:

Many years ago I had the Ridgid sander pictured below.

187027

Very smooth, powerful, well built, not bad dust control with attached vac.... a little quirky when changing modes but all around I was happy with it.

Have since made the move to Festool and "donated" the Ridgid to a fellow woodworker, he loves it and it is still going strong.

If this Metabo is a direct sibling and indicative of the brand then I would give Metabo a thumbs up.

Metabo is an old German brand, quite popular in Europe and Australia (where I'm from), historically they have made excellent tools, it used to be that virtually all metal guys here used Metabo grinders, and I believe that Lamello use (or used to use) Metabo grinder innards for their biscuit machines; that should be indicative of their quality. Most Metabo stuff
these days is very good, perhaps not as consistently excellent as in yesteryear but that is true for pretty much every tool manufacturer thats livery isn't black and green. :p

Thanks for the enlightenment Sam and Tom.

Sounds like decent stuff to me.
