Well, I thought it would be fun if the group of us that cut up that big maple shared our creations. I know I'm not the first to start turning it, but I guess I'll be the one to start the show. I'm hoping that within one month, we can all have a bowl (or whatever form you chose to turn) to show for our ourselves. Here is my first. I've shown it here from blank to roughed out. BTW, mine is only roughed and I know there are some should haves in it. Yes, I knocked off the edges of the rim (even though it may not look like I did). Also, it is soaking in a nice bath (DNA). I'll hop back on her in a couple of weeks.

She started out as a 13" blank. Roughed out to 12-12.5". Had a crack to deal with.

Okay...Tony, Patrick, Peter, Dan, and Dan...your turn!

Hey Mike,
You see a bowl. I see tendinitis that must be improving. Good to see you getting that "new" lathe a little dusty. Nice chunk of maple!!

...Tony, Patrick, Peter, Dan, and Dan...Mike, sounds like a 60s British rock group!

Nice looking wood, with some sweet Ambrosia!! That will certainly make a nice finished bowl. Look forward to seeing the finished post!

That is going to be a nice piece, Mike. Don't want to detour your thread, but can you tell me what kind of chuck that is, and is that an extension on the back?

Great looking roughout Mike. Got any more of that maple?;)

Thanks everyone, for the nice comments. I'm hoping the other guys who were there on Saturday will chime in with their turnings. I've seen "someone's" already and it is beautiful.

Jon, it is this one from Grizzly. http://www.grizzly.com/products/4-Jaw-Chuck-1-1-2-X-8-TPI/H7820 The only challenge I have is that I don't think they sell jumbo jaws for it. Also, it only opens up to 2 1/2", so that is why the tennon on mine is so small for such a large bowl...Oh, I didn't post that pic...never mind... I do, however, think that they sell 4" jaws for this chuck. I think I'll be ordering them.

I didn't mean for me!:D I kind of had my fill of ambrosia maple roughouts a month ago. Kept me busy for a couple of weeks.

A striking blank is on it's way to becoming a fine looking bowl.

Whoa! You guys sure got some fine looking maple going there. Mike, when I bought my grizz chuck I also bought the 100 mm jaws for it. Work great for large pieces and the pin jaws come in handy also. Back when I bought the jaws were only $9. Anxious for the finished piece now...Bill...

NIce looking Maple, it is my favorite to turn so far though so my opinion might not count. Both of the bowls in this tread so far should turn into some nice finished work.

Mike & Tony,

Those are real nice maple blanks! Looks like both of you are onto making a fine turning from your respective pieces............I wish that I would have had the time to make the wood party...........but too much work to do! That is fine stuff you have there Mike..........great of you to share it with the guys wo came up!

Oh, btw...........that PM90 [91:D] looks like it is just at home with that piece of maple on it!

Mike Cruz

Leo, all I have to say is this... How much is a 13" ambrosia/spalted maple worth to you? How much for an 18" (or whatever is your maximum size)? Multiply that times 10-20 blanks. Now, figure out how much gas and a one night hotel stay would have been. Even at $20 a blank, you would have been up to $400 or so. I think you would have spent less than $400 on gas, hotel and all but one of your meals (that one was on me :) ). OK, if you were on the West Coast, flight wouldn't have covered it. But GA...might have been worth it... Really, though, not trying to rub this tree in or anyting. Just wanting to share what we all come up with and see how different the bowls are. For example, Tony is WAY more versed at turning than I am. And you can see it in his form vs mine. Patrick is a pro (well, not necessarily a full time turner, but has taught turning), so I want to see his vision and execution as well. Dan, Dan, and Peter are fairly new to this as I am. So, you'll probably see a difference in their form and finish.

Only 3 1/2 weeks to go before we all have something to show...broken feet or not. I shouldn't say that, I'm going to a big ski race...

:D:D:D

Logic and reason always gets lost on me..... I wish I could have worked that out, I'd drive that far for it !!!! I could use a little vacation!!!

Beautiful wood though, glad you are sharing the results !!!!

Patrick, now THOSE are cool! Here I am happy that I've turned one, and you've tackled three already...and probably started on another by the time I'm typing this. Very nice. Can't wait to see them finished. I'm going the DNA route, do I have to wait 2 weeks or so to re-turn mine. Took it out of its bath this evening. Looks puuuuuurdy.

03-17-2011, 9:53 PM
hey mike,
I have not tried the dna method. I have to wait 3or 4 months. think I will try dna on one of the pieces so as to have a finished piece to show.

All of these are going to be very nice turnings. Mike, turn one thin, 3/8 thickness or less, then stick it in a paper bag for a couple weeks in a cool draft free area. You should then be able to sand and finish it.

Mike Cruz
03-20-2011, 9:35 PM
Dan, I think you meant to address Patrick not me...

Patrick, those are way cool. I bet your shop smells overpowingly like wet maple. Great ain't it? Thanks for continually posting pics.

I turned another. I'll post pics later.

Still, GREAT looking bowls. By looking at the shop floor you need to sell shavings. Mine looks like that right now too. It's a great feeling.

WOW! Beautiful wood and the bowl will turn out wonderfully! I think there may be a chunk of that in my future???? I may have to head east with my truck and trailer and find a bunch of that to haul back to WI. Or I need to find a way to get amrosia beetles to work harder on my red maple trees here. I just love the look of ambrosia, it just catches my eye.

Have fun,

Jeff

Jeff, we'll be cutting up another maple (one that was lying right next to this one) next winter (see pics above)...road trip? Might be worth it. Can probably get you some ash, and maybe some poplar...

Dan Hintz
03-21-2011, 6:57 AM
Sorry, Mike.... yeah, it was meant for Patrick.

Patrick, why Anchorseal a rough turned bowl? Some advantage to doing that over wrapping it in paper?

Mike Cruz
03-21-2011, 8:10 AM
I don't mean to speak for Patrick, but I believe he said he doesn't do DNA. So, anchorseal and a 6 month wait are in order...

Here's the plate I turned off the cutoff from the bowl in my first post on this thread. It is about 7" in diameter.
