Richard Raffan shows some hand sanding techniques in his video "The New Turning Wood." It is certainly not extensive, but there he does talk about it a little bit.

I'm not sure what you mean by hand sanding not power sanding. I both used a drill to power sand and also use the lathe with hand held paper that I also consider power sanding. I had an old Del Stubbs VHS that showed hand wet sanding a small apple bowl while on the lathe.
The lathe can be shut off and difficult areas can be finessed, but most areas are sanded with the lathe running
