I hauled home some big Cedar logs home not to long ago and thought you folks might enjoy seeing how I turn a log into a bowl blank. Here's a few pic taken this morning.

This is certainly some good-lookin' heartwood Gary! Can't wait to see the finished result.

That is some nice looking wood. I like the big bowls. What size will the bowls be when finished?

Gary that is some big cedar. That ought to make for some nice turning and the shop should smell good.

Very nice Gary!
Even though cedar is abundant here in WA, I have not seen much if any turnings made from it locally. Always been told it was too "fuzzy". Yours doesn't look fuzzy at all?
Do have any checking/splitting issues with including the pith in the turning with cedar? Any cedar specific drying issues one should be aware of?

Very pretty! How big is big? What do you do to keep that knot from cracking or do you just let it?

There's a trick to keeping the knots from busting apart---------16oz bottles of CA.

This is Eastern Red Cedar---- may be different than what you will find in Wa.

Very nice! I have never worked with cedar and had no idea the grain was so strong. I like this.

I agree with everyone else it looks great. You turned it right to finish did you not? Does it warp, move and split when it starts that wet?

Sweet looking piece you ended up with. I could never turn cedar because I am horribly allergic to it but this is nice to view from a distance! Maybe you could post a couple more views of it?

Heck it trys to split while it's still one the lathe-----I keep the CA real close-----don't tell anyone but I also use a spray water bottle to slow the drying down.
